Eco Silver

Eco Silver

Did you know I only use Eco Silver in my jewellery? Now if you read that and thought "well that's nice Fran but I don't know what that means" then carry on reading, this is for you!

To put it in its simplest terms, eco silver is sterling silver that has been made from 100% recycled silver products rather than being newly mined.

"Ok I'm with you now but why does that matter?" The process of mining and refining precious metals has an enormously negative impact on the environment. It damages the landscape, destroys animal habitats and releases toxic by-products into waterways and the atmosphere. Sounds scary right?! Producing just 1g of mined silver releases 196g of carbon emissions into the atmosphere. By comparison, 1g of recycled silver released just 15g in carbon emissions!

"That sounds great, so what's the catch?" Good news, there isn't one! many people mistakenly believe that eco silver is not 'real silver' but this is simply not true. No purity is lost in the recycling process, so silver can be melted down and recycled repeated without any effect on its quality, it is indistinguishable from newly mined silver.

So to sum up, just by choosing eco silver we can minimise the negative effects of the mining process, reduce waste and cut carbon emissions with no impact to the quality of the silver. Sustainability never looked so good!
